This is critical - guys, you have got to spread the word on this:
(You might want to leave my rant out that follows the basic information when you pass it along)
NPR had a report this morning about illegal Mexican workers in New York. Apparently work is harder to come by and, contrary to what the government and some rabid xenophobes would have you believe, they aren't looking for a hand out. If they can not work they want to go back to Mexico, but many can't afford the transportation to get there, so they are turning themselves in to ICE and saying they want to be deported. WRONG MOVE!! DON'T DO THIS!!!!!
The problem is, most of these people are poor and there's not a whole hell-of-a-lot of paperwork on them in the way of birth certificates or anything else proving that they are indeed from Mexico and with out that the Mexican government will not accept them back. The Mexican government is not trying to be difficult. It's just that ICE has been known to deport United States citizens to Mexico - like the mentally challenged young man whose brother came back from serving in Iraq to find that he was missing and who finally found, much to his family's relief, wandering around Guatamala because he'd been picked up by ICE and been deported! Hey - he signed a paper saying he'd been born in Mexico, so why not deport him? Of course, he signed every paper they put in front of him and he was obviously not competent to do so, but what's one citizen here or there - right? That's not an isolated incident, so Mexico has good reason to be wary.
Do you know what happens to citizens of other countries whose countries won't accept them back? They sit in our prisons indefinitely. Rapists we let out when they have served their time. Thieves we let out when they have served their time. Drug dealers we let out when they have served their time. Pedophiles we let out when they have served their time (and I'm none to happy about that one). Even murderers - murderers we let out when they have served their time . . . BUT IMMIGRANTS WHO HAVE COMMITTED NO CRIME AND WHOSE COUNTRIES WON'T ACCEPT THEM DO HARD PRISON TIME INDEFINITELY!!!
Right along with the Liberians we tried to deport that were turned back by their country, right along with Christian Iranians who fled with the Shah who can't be sent back, right along with all the other unfortunate immigrants who are rotting away in "detention" (ICE's euphemism for doing hard time for no crime) for what appears to be the rest of their lives these people are headed to prison for good. You might get parole for murder, but as of right now being undocumented is a life sentence if your country of origin won't take you back.
For those of you who think they deserve it and who think that it's just fine to do things to immigrants that you would shoot someone for if they did it to your dog do remember this . . . it's costing the taxpayers $100 dollars a day to house these guys - and that comes out of your wallet too, Bucko. Oh, but wait, Ms "We-Don't-Need-No-Stinkin'-Statue-of-Liberty" Napolitano is working on housing them in hotels and such to save money and keep these people locked up indefinitely more "humanely" . . . that is what "with Liberty and Justice for all" stands for - right? "All" is a synonym for "some" - right?
But not to worry. Some of these immigrants who are being held indefinitely have things like serious cancer and they aren't getting proper medical care, so they'll die before too long - in prison - away from their families, but it's not like they are a dog or some other animal that has rights to proper care. These are immigrants. They have no rights here. Of course, some of them have citizen families and citizen children who will then be minus a loved one, a bread winner, a parent. These policies and actions by ICE are mentally and fiancially torturing many American citizens, permanently traumatizing and destroying them right now as I write this, but hey, it's not like the citizens of this country matter when it comes to these things - right? It's all about what the government wants - right? We are here to serve our government - right? If government policies are destroying our lives then we just need to buck up and be glad to sacrifice ourselves for the good of the nation - right? Isn't that what the US of A is built upon? That's what we stand for - right?
Oh . . . wait a minute . . . I might have that mixed up with another country . . . ooops, my bad . . .
I am one of those citizens who is being mentally and financially tortured by ICE. If you think, because of my last name, that I am Hispanic and an immigrant, think again! My ancestors started coming here in 1632. They are Dunhams, Shermans and Pooles. I am a hard-core Yankee, born and bred. My family founded much of Massachusetts and one signed the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. The only American in this country that has deeper roots than I have is a Native American - and ICE has mindlessly made my life living hell for close to a year now! Do you think you and your loved ones are safe from their excesses? Don't bet on that. If they can reach me, they can reach anyone. You are not safe.
